The Dream Tree School - The school for children with Autism

THE DREAMTREE SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

We are proud to present The DreamTree School for Children with Autism.  It is definitely a dream come true for Paul and Henriette Hubers, founders of De DroomBoom School for Children with Autism in the Netherlands in 2006 and trustees of the Cape Autism Charity Trust.  Their dream was to build a school for their son, Thom, and other children who, like him, are living with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

This autism-friendly school is situated on the picturesque campus of Somerset College, in the heart of the Cape Winelands. We are extremely grateful to the Somerset College Board of Governors which has made land available on their campus for us to build our very special school.  The DreamTree School for children with autism is a private, independent school that will serve children in our community who have been diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder or related learning disorders.

Our vision is to create a unique, autism-friendly, integrated, developmentally-focused and therapeutic educational environment in which the optimum growth of each learner can be achieved.

At The DreamTree School, learning takes place in a social classroom environment with a high adult to child ratio: one teacher to a maximum of six children per class. Depending on individual class needs, some classes will also have an assistant.

The DreamTree School creates opportunities for one-on-one instruction as well as small and large groups. A comprehensive Individual Educational Developmental Programme (IEDP) is drawn up for each learner, ensuring that his/her unique scholastic, social and emotional needs are met within a group setting.

Extra-curricular activities also form part of our daily schedule. During these activities we aim to create opportunities for spontaneous engagement among the learners and staff/volunteers that will reinforce social interaction in a playful manner. Skills that are taught in the classroom are reinforced during these activities. Activities such as Kinder Kinetics; music; various forms of arts and crafts; fantasy play, Drum Joy and Dance Mouse are included.

We are also grateful to have access to Somerset College’s facilities such as the library, IT facilities; sports fields and swimming pool, which enable us to develop a versatile daily schedule for our learners.

Educators, parents and therapists work together as collaborators to enable development, growth and progress for each unique learner. We believe in a trans-disciplinary approach to intervention and welcome therapists and specialists from all the involved disciplines who would like to share their knowledge and expertise to improve the lives of our special learners.

Through this initiative we wish to reach out to the Helderberg and surrounding communities.
